we_are_not_bashful_sign1Some 250 to 300 Asheville area residents turned out this evening for a peaceful march and demonstration to protest several alleged anti-gay incidents in the downtown area and nearby neighborhoods as well as deter any future such incidents.

Asheville has long had a reputation as a city that is welcoming, tolerant and inclusive of its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and queer (LGBTQ) citizens. It is a destination that is known wide and far for its many independent restaurants, artists, music scene and a diverse and colorful populace.

But, as with many other cities, there are always some folks who don't appreciate or respect the LGBTQ community here.  Reportedly there have been five separate apparently anti-gay incidents. None of the victims have come forward publicly or filed reports with the Asheville Police Department (APD) because they are afraid.

Second Episode of Locally-Filmed Web Series In Preproduction PDF Print E-mail

The second episode of Tomorrow Waits For No One, a locally-produced web series, is in preproduction and will begin filming this spring.  The first episode, Who Am I?, premiered last November on local public access station URTV, cable channel 20.  Episode 2, Beware the Stranger, will begin shooting in April and is expected to debut this summer.

Tomorrow Waits For No One is the gripping tale of Marcus Lazano.  Chased by two thugs, he is run over by Frank Cain's car and awakens in the hospital with amnesia.  Romantic sparks fly between Det. Cole Washington and Marcus as the detective investigates the ‘missing persons in reverse’ case.  Frank is the only one who knows Marcus's identity (or is he?) but keeps mum as a fortune may be up for the taking.

Are You Man Enough to Walk a Mile in Her Shoes? PDF Print E-mail

There's a great video getting lots of hits on YouTube that has also been making the rounds on Facebook. The video, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Asheville, features numerous Asheville men, some more well-known than others, dancing in high heels to the song Walk Like a Man by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. Well, some are dancing while others are playing soccer, doing martial arts, or runing across the street in a nun's habit. They all did it to promote an upcoming fundraising event for Our Voice, a crisis intervention agency serving victims of sexual violence in Buncombe County.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is the 9th International Men's March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence. It will take place on April 24 of this year. Though the reason for the march is a serious one, it is a fun way to raise awarness, educate the community and support women who have been victims of such crimes. [VIDEO AFTER THE JUMP]
