The sun is shining here in Asheville and I hope it’s shining where you are in The Carolinas. This weekend is supposed to be warm and sunny – NO SNOW! It’s time for the Academy Awards so look for an Oscar Party somewhere in your Gayborhood this weekend. March Madness has started so I’m sure you can catch some great college basketball action on a TV screen in your favorite gay bar or lesbian bar. I know I’ll be watching some of those games.
The next big holiday coming up is Saint Patrick’s Day. Please let us know what is happening in your Gayborhood to celebrate the day when we’re all Irish (or at least a little green around the edges from drinking one Guinness too many).
The other good news this week is that the District of Columbia has legalized same-sex marriage. Folks were lined up quietly this week to get their marriage licenses. There is a waiting period so the first gay and lesbian weddings won’t take place until Tuesday, March 9. We may not be able to get anything else done in our nation’s capitol but queers can get married there now just like in 5 states.
What’s been going on in your gayborhood? If there is something new and/or noteworthy going on where you live in North or South Carolina that may be of interest or have an impact on the LGBTQ community, please let us know. If you’re favorite LGBTQ bar, restaurant or organization is planning something festive for St. Patrick’s Day, please let us know and we’ll help get the word out to the entire gayborhood. Just send us an email at

Bootstraps Burlesque Presents: The Laudanum Express. The Laudanum Express is a cutting edge combination of burlesque and performance art inspired by the classic silent films, Metropolis, Nasferatu, and Flesh and the Devil. This cast creates their own depth with similar visuals, drama, illusion, heartbreak, suspense, laughter, and the occasional baring of flesh. Set in the late 1800s to the early 1900s on a train to Kyoto, Japan, these silent film stars come to life through the story of a lonely scientist in search of a mysterious tincture. When ingested by a fair lady, this potion can cause her to fall in love. Expect a thickened plot, extravagant and historical stage makeup, lavish costuming, and beautiful choreography. Bootstraps Burlesque, a traveling caravan of classic and modern burlesque performers is a collaboration of the sauciest and most talented dames in Asheville including models, belly dancers, fetish performers, trained ballet dancers, nationally acclaimed jugglers, and a trick pup, Sophia. These fiery girls have been dubbed "the leading ladies of visual artistry.” See the Laudanum Express at Club 828 located at 62 North Carter Street in Asheville on Friday or Saturday, March 5 or 6 at 9pm.
