we_are_not_bashful_sign1Some 250 to 300 Asheville area residents turned out this evening for a peaceful march and demonstration to protest several alleged anti-gay incidents in the downtown area and nearby neighborhoods as well as deter any future such incidents.

Asheville has long had a reputation as a city that is welcoming, tolerant and inclusive of its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and queer (LGBTQ) citizens. It is a destination that is known wide and far for its many independent restaurants, artists, music scene and a diverse and colorful populace.

But, as with many other cities, there are always some folks who don't appreciate or respect the LGBTQ community here.  Reportedly there have been five separate apparently anti-gay incidents. None of the victims have come forward publicly or filed reports with the Asheville Police Department (APD) because they are afraid.

This BITCH is HOT: an interview with Bitch PDF Print E-mail

Music is an industry in which women are still set apart in some ways from their male counterparts. Although women musicians may not find their way to the Top 40 lists or get much airplay on radio stations, many have succeeded in supporting themselves through their art and garnering a supportive fan base. In recent years, musicians have struck out on their own apart from big labels, recording and releasing albums all on their own or with another artists or a smaller label that supports the musician's own vision. This migration has left more room for women artists like Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams, Ferron, and Melissa Ferrick as well as others to create and develop musical styles that often defy categorization and mix or redefine genres. One such artist is Bitch.

Bitch's musical career can be traced back to Sesame Street. The first episode she watched at age three included an overalls-clad cartoon character playing a fiddle while he counted. A year later, she started taking classical violin lessons and continued to do so for another 14 years until she went off to college at DePaul University. There she studied acting and theatrical arts. It was there that she also met Animal. It was Animal who convinced Bitch to take the violin out of the case and play again. She hasn't stopped making music since.

Scattered, Smothered, and Summer'd: The Essentials PDF Print E-mail

Howdy, y'all! May the luck of the Irish find thee well. Let's welcome in my favorite month: March.

Why is March my favorite, you ask? Well, for starters, it's the month of my birth. Yes, I turn one more year older and bitter this month. March is usually a drunken blur for me (What else is new? SHUT UP, SUMMER!) because I usually drink like an old Irishman all month long to not only my own, but my fellow friends' birthdays as well. Here's a plug for you to buy me a drink: my day is the 12th, and this year it falls on a Friday. Needless to say, I will celebrate all weekend long. Then I have to have a martini in remembrance of Ira/ Stephanie's birthday, the 16th, followed by my drag sister's (Natalie Smalls) on the 19th. Speaking of Natalie, don't forget her Miss Shamrock pageant scheduled for March 13th. Don't miss the girls competing for that gold at the end of the rainbow. The month of Pisces is full of fun, and we're one month closer to spring and warmer weather.

Now that I've shared my shameless plug for free drinks for my birthday, let's get to cooking.

From the Desk: Women Making History PDF Print E-mail

March is National Women’s History Month. Often times ‘history’ is relegated to things, people, and events of the long dead past.  Things that aren’t really relevant to our lives now. Or so we think. But ‘history’ is in many ways a living part of the human experience. Every day living, breathing people are making history. And Women’s History is not just about women but also about the impact women have and are making on world events, politics, society, and all of history.

Case in point: In February, the Asheville City Council took up the issue of offering equal benefits to city employees with a same-sex partner as is offered to married straight employees. This would include health insurance, bereavement leave, prescriptions drugs, and life insurance.  Seems fair.  Same-sex couples are barred from marriage in North Carolina therefore gay and lesbian couples cannot access the same benefits and privileges as married heterosexuals can even though their families and households function in much the same way.
