The Near Future of LGBTQ Equality in North Carolina PDF Print E-mail
Written by Lin Orndorf
Wednesday, 03 February 2010 16:54

In 2009, national issues like the economy, unemployment, and healthcare reform dominated national and even local or regional headlines. Same-sex marriage has all but disappeared from national news and even the passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which was signed by President Obama in October, received little notice. Recently the most-mentioned LGBTQ news item is the proposed anti-homosexual law in Uganda. Fortunately, the most recent updates seem to indicate that the death penalty portion of the Ugandan law will be removed.

What will 2010 bring in the way of equal rights and protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans folks here in the United States?

In 2009, Ricky Burns II was named as the Best LGBT Young Adult Leader in a poll conducted by Q-Notes. Ricky Burns, originally from Maryland, has lived in North Carolina since he was 12 and has been a Charlotte resident since he started college there in 2004. In addition to running a non-profit foundation, Clownin Around Foundation, that grants dreams to kids with disabilities, Ricky Burns is a co-creator and executive producer of QueerView, the nation’s only live LGBTQ talk show starring Sabrina Love.

Burns is part of the next generation of LGBTQ leaders in North Carolina and elsewhere who have grown up in the Post-Stonewall Era and many of them are young enough not to have witnessed the horrors of the early years of the AIDS Pandemic. Their experiences of growing up, coming of age and coming out are very different from those who are over 40.  Burns, like many other of our young up-and-coming leaders is aware of and respects those who came before him.

2010 has arrived and Stereotypd has passed a milestone. It was one year ago this month that we debuted the new name of this publication.  In that year, much has transpired. Some of it was good. Some of it was not so good. All of it was challenging and character-building as if this LGBTQ publication had gone through its Saturn Return. Or maybe Mercury was in retrograde – a lot – last year.
